MR. RAJNIKANTBHAI S. BACHKANIWALA
PRESIDENT
VIDYA VIHAR TRUST
Ever since independence, debate about Indian education has been raging as we have largely been following the changed system of education as imposed by the Britishers during their time of rule for past 200 year. Instead of improving this system, government after government has played havoc with their lop-sided approach towards primary & secondary education in our country. State after state have fallen prey to the false presumption about the medium of instruction and with the result, today most of the populations in urban India would insist their children study in English medium rather than their vernacular language.
With this backdrop, I would like to discuss Gujarat Specific Case. Gujarat is no different as far as the unstable & frequent policy changes in the entire education system. Our examination based learning, instead of knowledge based teaching has made our children mere hard workers in craving their lessons rather than understanding them. The result of this is evident to us after 60 years of this system in existence, We have far too poor crop of students going into higher learning like universities and research institutes. Today, we have one of the lowest PhD intakes in proportion to our population and number of universities. This has cascading effect on the future, as no qualified guides are available to undertake further doctorate studies,
Corning back to schooling, involvement of government at almost all the level has made the entire system inefficient and highly corrupt With the result, quality of teachers, particularly in the government funded schools is far from satisfactory. Again this has a cascading effect as the output of students, under these teachers would be affected to that extent. Examination systems, as discussed earlier have been faulty and students are under constant pressure to perform only in exams. With the result, that they have little or no time to invest in other talents or their own interests, of course, there are always exceptions.
Having said this, I do not want to present only a bleak picture; Winds of change are taking place. New system though may be experimental, have definitely gladdened educationist. However more awareness amongst parents and teachers about the knowledge based systems has to be imparted Career oriented schooling in the graduating years would make the students self-sufficient & employable. There is no point in running colleges like factories to produce graduates, who cannot find employment for want of skills.
However, we cannot change the system by remaining outside the system. Good schools across the state should take lead in imparting that extra knowledge to their students to bring them on par with the world best technology already helping us in this area. Schools should equally pay attention to all round development of the students so that our state & country can have more responsible and aware future citizens.
